Happy Halloween guys! I thought I'd get into the spirit a little bit by throwing on some Halloween colours and acting scared in my backyard. Haha! For this post I wanted to venture somewhere kind of creepy in my neighbourhood but I then realized that my house is pretty creepy itself! The place is in and around 100 years old and for most of those years it has been in possession of my family. When I was little I was always afraid of being haunted by the long dead characters I had heard about through my grandmothers stories. I would seek refuge in the new addition of the house because I thought that they couldn't make it there because it was new... or something. I still get creeped out by all the unexplained creeks and cracks that happen in the middle of the night sometime, but mostly I just feel at home in my big old creepy house now.

I kind of just threw on all my favourite pieces from this past week for this outfit - add the vintage blazer from my shop and my orange sweater! I felt pleasantly autumn-esque and Halloweeny at the same time. BOO!

Anyway lovelies I hope you have so much fun tonight and be safe! Don't do anything I wouldn't do... :p

outfit deets: shoes - Big Buddha // tights - h&m // dress - F21 // jacket - Bicyclette // collar - vintage

I've worn a few different variations of this outfit since I acquired the collar and jacket but it's just the perfect chilly Fall day outfit. Fall floral print? check. Favourite oxfords? check. Black tights, cargo jacket, warm fur collar? check check check. Seriously, I can't go wrong in this outfit!

It's almost Halloween! I don't think I am actually dressing up or doing anything particularly Halloweeny except staying in and watching some scary movies - but I am still excited. I love curling up with some candy and watching a good b-movie or two. Honestly, my favourite horror movies are really campy ones. Some of my favourites include Plan 9 from Outerspace, Shivers, and Gremlins to name a few. This year I am getting new ideas for movies to watch this Halloween from James Rofle and his annual Monster Madness series. This year he reviews gems like Critters, the Troll Trilogy and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. All of which are on my hope-to-watch list this Halloween. What do you guys plan on doing this Halloween? Got any horror b-movie recs for me?

Hope you all had a happy Thursday and a Friday that is equally as happy.

on repeat: Serena Ryder

I cannot believe I have not done an On Repeat about Serena Ryder yet! She is a big favourite of mine. I find her so terribly inspiring. I really enjoy listening to her in the fall/winter. I'm not sure why - maybe because it was fall when I first discovered her and listened to her pretty religiously for months afterwards! Plus, I saw her live last fall with Dale and it was a great show. She is an amazing performer and her voice is just beyond. Her LP is a must listen. She also has an album of covers entitled If Your Memory Serves You Well with covers of Leonard Cohen and Buddy Holly just to name a few. Little Bit of Red (the song in the video above) is from her LP and one of my personal faves! She's a true artist, she's truly Canadian, and totally worthy of a listen!

Do you guys like these On Repeat posts? I like the idea that you could play any one of the songs from the series and look through my photos and it would add a little something extra. Bardot in Blue often adds songs to her posts and it just makes the posts so much more magical. However, she does take beautiful pictures and she is in France so her posts are already so full of whimsy!

Alright guys happy hump day!

I always thought this bush was sumac! I just found out it's not - now I have no idea what it is. but it's my favourite because it turns bright red in the Fall! Honestly, today my edit was talking about how Fall is her "least sarcastic" season because she is just always in awe of the beauty that surrounds her at any given moment and how it reminds her of everything she has to be thankful of. Of course she follows up this statement with an expression of thankfullness that Canada's beautiful autumns eventually turn into cold and harsh winters because perpetual autumn might actually turn her into a nice person! I feel the same way, but she said it so well that I just had to paraphrase her. Go check her out - she's a pro thrifter and hilarious to boot!

I wore this to school and then to go vote for my city's next mayor. I love these tights from modcloth - I feel like they really make the outfit today. Aside from that I just put on my trusty long sleeve black dress and draped and belted one of my fave go-to scarves at the waist.

Happy Monday!

I don't know if a lot of you are familiar with the Group of Seven - but they are a group of Canadian painters most famous for their work done during the 20s. A few of them used to live in around where Dale lives and now their houses are historical sites. We went and checked one of them out on Saturday. Dale's neighbourhood is so gorgeous so it's no wonder a number of them decided to live there. Their art work always reminds me of this time of year so it was appropriate we ended up at this house on a beautiful Fall day. So pretty:

"Autumn in Orillia" by Franklin Carmichael.

I just threw this outfit on to go out for brunch with Dale - I got challah french toast and sausage. Delish! I liked this dress because of it's use of the colour orange contrasted with blue and I thought it would fit in perfectly with my wardrobe and besides - so great for Fall! Paired with my Bicyclette jacket and my trusty Big Buddha oxfords it was a pretty awesome outfit for that day.

I hope you all had great weekends, did anyone do anything fun?

p.s. these photos were taken with Dale's iphone4, can anyone tell the difference from my regular photos?

It's getting close to Halloween and if my last outfit picture was something like Margot Tenenbaum, today's outift is something like Sailor Jupiter...meets jungle explorer...meets school girl? It's a stretch I know but her colours were pink and green! I used to love Sailor Moon when I was a kid - I still know all the words to the theme song. Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight never running from a real fight - she is the one named Sailor Moon. Oh man - I so want to be Sailor Moon for Halloween now. I found some cosplay costumes online but they are all so expensive!

What are you guys thinking of being for Halloween? Have you started putting together your costumes yet? Let me know!

I went to go see the Planet Smashers on Friday with my girlfriends. They're a canadian ska band I used to see a lot when I was a bit younger. I decided to go out and see them again because I always had fun seeing them live and besides I missed skanking. Minus the annoyance of having my toes stepped on and elbows in my back the show was a lot of fun. I lack any proper shoes to skank in anymore so my brown oxfords had to suffice. They did me well but got a little scuffed in the process.

Yes, this is what I wore to the show. I was a little out of place with the fur collar but I assure you it was safely tucked away in my bag whilst inside. This collar is seriously a new staple of mine. I want to wear it with everything and it is so soft and warm. It's in amazing condition for being at least 40 years old.

Just a quick little post for a Sunday Night. I am off to watch Mad Men before bed. School tomorrow and I have some shop updates scheduled for later in the day! I hope you all had great weekends!

hair crazy; or my crazy hair

Well I think we've known eachother for long enough for me to let you in on a little secret: my hair is scary bonkers. If I were just to let my hair dry naturally and not straighten it with a flat iron it would look like pretty much like the before picture below all of the time. In the winter especially when the air lacks hot humidity my curls turn straight into frizz and go totally wild. The before picture was taken after brushing my hair though so it was a little crazier then it would be if I had not brushed the curls out. Keep in mind, I didn't tease it or do anything to it other than brush it.

Point is, I would be lost without my hair straightener. I have been straightening my hair for years but within the past few years the technology has become so awesome that it only takes me about a half hour to straighten all of my hair, and 15 minutes to only semi straighten it (which is what I usually do). About 5 years ago it could take me up to an hour and a half to straighten my hair!

Here is a little glimpse into the process I go through to get my hair straight. Pardon the face sans makeup:
Photobucket
After washing with shampoo and a serious cream conditioner (I'm not picky about shampoos, but very picky about conditioners). I let my hair dry naturally so I only have to use one heat styling tool on it. If I were to blowdry my hair on top of flatironing it - my hair would be fried. I comb my hair while wet and then brush it out once dry and before straightening. The end result of this prelimary process looks something like the above picture.

Photobucket
Second, I put in some biosilk in my hair starting at the tips and then section my hair off starting with the back and start straightenin'! I take medium size strands of hair and try not to go over them more than once - but if the area is particularly stubborn sometimes I have to do it about 3 or 4 times. I repeat this sectioning and straightening process until my hair has reached the desired straightness level!

Photobucket
...and voila! My hair is straight!

Another important thing to note is that I only wash my hair once every 3 days because it's so dry to begin with so I only have to seriously straighten it once every 3 days as well. In between I just do touch ups where needed.

Do you guys have to do anything to your hair to make it look as awesome as it does day to day?

Happy weekend!

outfit deets: shoes - modcloth // jeans - American Eagle // top - vintage // cardigan - h&m // jacket - old!

A few weeks ago my cousin and I decided we needed some serious retail therapy. We got a bunch of stuff but one of my favourite purchases of the day were these straight black jeans from American Eagle. I have been looking for a good pair of black jeans for a long time now. I'm not a huge jeans/pants person but they do have their upsides (ex. throwing them on for early morning classes) and I was missing a black pair in my wardrobe. I've never been the hugest fan of American Eagle but I must say these jeans fit like a dream! In these photos I guess they kindof look like leggings but they are their version of jeggings which are more jean than legging. They have real back pockets and a zipper and button!

I really just threw on this outfit to run around the neighbourhood doing errands. The best part of my trip out and about was definitely the perogies purchased at a local Ukrainian deli. I wish I had more right now!

I am going to start showing more details in my outfit posts. Sometimes the details in my outfit is the most personalized element of the ensemble and it's a shame to let it go unnoticed! I didn't get the whole necklace or my hair clip today but next time I'll be more thorough and get all of the little details in.

Alright guys I am off to go work on tomorrow's post. I think you'll get a kick out of it!

on repeat: Ben Folds and Nick Hornby

It's so easy from above, you can really see it all...

I've seriously been listening to the new Ben Folds collab with Nick Hornby 'on repeat' for the past few days. I have even managed to get a song stuck in Dale's head! muahah. Nick Hornby is normally a novelist/screen writer (you might recognize him for High Fidelity or About a Boy) but in this instance he teamed up with Ben Folds and wrote the lyrics for the album Lonely Avenue. It's strange though because if I hadn't known Hornby was behind all of the lyrics I would have assumed the songs were all written by Folds. It's such a Ben Folds album - some awesomely quirky songs mixed in with pretty songs that tell the story of a girl or boy or of a girl and boy. Anyway, I love it - give the song a listen and tell me if you love it too!

In other news - check out Megan Nielson's Fall 2010 collection. I am so in love with everything but how awesome would the Brumby skirt look paired with the Banksia Top tucked into it? Oh, I can dream.

In...more news! Within the week I sincerely hope to have some updates to the shop. I have so many awesome things to add but just have not had the time to get them ready! Fortunately mid-terms are almost done and I should have the time within the next few days. I have some seriously amazing winter coats to put up.

Also finally, I just wanted to thank you guys for sticking with me through my absences and ups and downs. You guys are all so sweet and I love you all for reading :)

outfit deets: shoes - modcloth // tights - UO // dress - forever21 // bracelets - vintage

Yowz! The past two outfits I have worn have been almost totally comprised of non-vintage non-thrifted wear. I don't know what's going on. Mainly I need a serious thrifting adventure soon because my meter is running too low. You will probably also notice the abundance of Forever21 in my outfits lately. This is because my school is right beside one and lately I have been walking in there just to look around and all of these amazingly cute dresses throw themselves at me. It's too easy to shop there, I don't trust it.

Easy or not, I am in LOVE with this dress. I love the mutton-chop sleeve and the big floral pattern sends my head spinning. Typically I wouldn't do a big pattern like this cause I'm on the short side bit I think this one works. I paired it with my fave comfy sweater tights and brown oxfords and called it a day.

Do you guys have any dangerous stores around your house, workplace or school? Somewhat fortunately, there aren't any thrift shops within reasonable walking distance from my school or home. If there were, I would never have any money or any room in my closet.

Alright guys, hope you all have happy weekends.

until soon,

xo Robyn

the old maple tree

outfit deets: shoes - modcloth // tights - h&m // skirt - forever 21 // cardigan - Laura's from swap // jacket - old! // scarf - gift // bracelets - vintage

I wanted to take some pictures under the big tree in my backyard. This tree was planted when Nan was only a year old so it's always been her favourite tree. It's my favourite tree too! My dad has built so many different swings from it. He made a swing that looked like a horse entirely out of old tires. That is talent. We since destroyed it in our reckless youth, but I remember it fondly.

I threw this on for a lazy day at Dales. We ate cheesecake and kraft dinner and were lazy buttheads. It was nice. Oh and he got an iphone 4 so he gave me his old ipod touch! Yay. I've had my nano for awhile now so this feels like a total upgrade!

I bought this skirt from Forever21 a few weeks ago and I am in love with the colour. The skirt itself isn't really the greatest quality and it wrinkles so easily but it was under 15 bucks and the colour was just too perfect. I paired it with my fave woolly h&m tights, my very old jean jacket and Laura's cardigan. I was pretty pleased with the outfit, it was comfy and warm and fuzzy.

I really hope all of you are doing well! I've missed you guys and blogging regularly but I am going to seriously try and get back in the swing.

little Audrey

Hey guys, so I've been notably absent in the past little while and this is because my Nan has passed away. I'll be back soon with outfit photos but in the meantime I thought I'd share some photos of my Nan because she was such a terribly fashionable lady. I think the pictures do a lot of talking for themselves.

She died the day after turning 91 years of age and she loved every last one of those years, because she loved to be alive. I lived with Nan my whole life and so even though she's been there for all of my years, there's been almost 70 years that I haven't been there with her! I love looking back at old pictures of her because it gives me such a relatable glimpse back into time. I know so many of her her old stories, it's nice to have pictures to go with the stories.

Like I said, Nan was a pretty snappy dresser, she would get dressed up and walk down the street and she said the boys would follow her around singing, "oh there she goes oh there she goes all dressed up in her Sunday clothes! But OH the stink of her dirty toes!" How I wish she had some sort of air tight capsule in which she could have thrown all of her clothes into! If she only knew that she would have a granddaughter one day who would be so interested in all of her stuff.

Nan always used to say that when she looked at me she saw herself, so now when I look at myself I see her. So even though she's gone and I miss her, a little bit of her will always be with me.

I love you a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.
