singing my life with his words

There's certain songs that just take you back to really exact moments. Ludacris' "Fantasy" never fails to remind me of driving home in my dads blue chevy with my best friends on my like 14/15th birthday. The girls were all unabashedly singing the lyrics to that song (you know - "I wanna lick lick lick you from your head to your toes...") in the back seat as I sat red faced in the front seat hoping my dad wasn't paying attention. The Pixies "Where is my Mind" reminds me of driving around up north by my cottage in torrential down pour just to get ice cream whilst doing terribly silly things with my girlfriends.

Everytime I hear "Killing Me Softly" by the Fugees I am reminded of my grade 9 "talent show." When some very brave girl got up on stage and sang this song to a crowd that was very resistant to her take on the song. So to show that she was a rebel and didn't care what everyone else thought - she attempted to "crowd surf" her way off stage - despite the total lack of a crowd in front of the stage. Of course the song reminds me of other things too, it's a beautiful song, but I can't hear the song without remembering that instance. Do any songs do that for you guys?

I actually wore this outfit last weekend, but have been too busy until today to get around to posting the snaps! Really simple outfit for a casual lunch with a friend. I love this sweater with these jeans - ultra comfy!

how am I to be?

Since I started blogging I've been struggling to reconcile my own average everyday views with the way I feel about fashion. Truth is, I love clothes and I love getting dressed up - and I love that I have found a community that loves the same thing! I don't love it all the time, and sometimes I think the fashion world is so ridiculous and petty and totally irrelevant to everything else that is going on in the world, and in my head. Bottom line though, clothes/fashion or whatever you want to call it inspire me in a way that no other art form ever has before.

With that said though, I'm not some avante garde fashionista - and in the pictures below you'll probably note some old staples. In any case, I felt good in my outfit today and loved that I matched the pond and the turtles.

Dale and I went for a walk through tig forest and to the pond. There were crazy birds, ducks, turtles and people to be found there. All of which I found highly entertaining. Dale snapped some pictures of me and the wildlife while we were out.

style definitions

I've been thinking today about definitions of style and how one might go about defining their own personal style. I have a really hard time doing this because my wardrobe contains pieces from all over the place. I know what kind of image I'm going for in my head, but I can never quite put a label or name to it. This becomes difficult when websites like Chictopia ask me to classify my style in terms of an era or label. My clothing is very rarely all from one era and I'm never really doing a theme. I usually end up putting "classic" "casual" or "vintage" if enough of my pieces are vintage. This is getting boring though! I'm not saying I want to be able to classify my style, I think it's not so necessary, however, it can be helpful for sites like Chictopia. What do you guys think? Do you have a hard time like me defining your personal style in terms of labels? Do you think it's easier to connect with readers if you have a "define-able" style? Let me know in the comments!

This is what I wore today, all day, and it was really comfortable. It was another boiling day so I was happy to be wearing white on top. I liked the look of the tights, because I didn't want to appear too casual - but it would have been cooler without them. Didn't matter so much though because I was in an air conditioned office setting for most of the day.

I liked the way these pictures turned out today - it was just starting to cloud over as I snapped them so I liked the lighting that provided a lot. I had fun with it. Now as I am sitting here I hear thunder rolling in. Time for showers!

lazy and lust

O hai! Soo I was pretty lazy with my outfit today. I just threw on a tee, jeans and a cardi. Dale and I took some pictures but I just felt shlubby. I had a shlub-day. I'm okay with that. Shlubby is totally fine with me now and again. shlub shlub. Did I make that word up? Anywhoozles, we did get some full outfit shots - I might throw them up to flickr/chictopia tomorrow. I don't know though, Dale took some good pictures it's just I'm not feeling the outfit. Often times when I wear jeans I don't feel like "me". I think I'll probably need to further explore exactly why this is the case in the future, because I am not totally sure at this moment. Do any of you have similar feelings towards certain types of clothing, where you just don't feel like "yourself" in them? I used to feel that way with dresses and skirts back in the day I think, go figure.

In any case, I want to show you guys some etsy finds that I have been lusting over lately:

• These brown leather coach oxfords. They look so buttery soft and perfectely worn in.
• This 70's floral print shirt dress. Not my usual colour palette but it's just so so cute.
• Black leather pencil skirts! Def gonna need to pick one of these up sometime soon. Maybe even a red one, if I feel so bold.
  
• Professor shorts! <3>
• Giant bakelite ring. Oh my. I will need to show my mom this one.
  
• Bird cage dress. cute!

Anyway, any of these purchases would put a noticeable dent in my funds so lusting over them is all I shall do! Seriously though I am going to need some brown/cognac flat oxfords for this summer and some "professor" shorts may be in order too.

Hopefully tomorrow I will have a proper outfit post! Seeyou guys then.

Face of Boe

ello ellos. Two posts ago I made mention of my jacket, and how it has a story all its own. Well, I thought I might take this opportunity to tell the story!

My friend Laura is one of my greatest partners in crime when it comes to thrifting. However, our pairing includes one fatal flaw: we are pretty dang close to the same size. One particular day we were out on what was turning out to be not the most successful of thrifting adventures when Laura lay her hands on this jacket. My first and most immediate thought upon seeing the jacket was: Jack Harkness! of Doctor Who and Torchwood fame. It is just a slightly military inspired peacoat but it really reminded me of a female version of his famous coat.

Anyway, Laura was unfamiliar with Jack Harkness but she fell in love with the coat too, regardless of that fact. She grabbed it first so by all accounts she had claim to it. Still, I was sad (I pouted, allegedly) and kept thinking about how great it would look with the new grey shoulder bag Dale had given to me for Christmas. It looked good on Laura though so I had to stop pouting and let her walk away with it, knowing that at least I would be reunited with it everytime I saw her in it. The thing about Laura at the time, was that she was in the process of readying to move to England and was already fretting about all the clothes she would probably have to leave behind. So on another thrifting trip a few days later (we're addicted, it's a problem, we know) she looked at me and said something like, "oh hey - remember that jacket? - you can have it, it won't fit in my luggage." The next thing she said was, "are you gonna cry? please don't." So that about sums up how I felt about becoming the owner of this vintage navy blue military inspired Jack Harkness coat! :)

Dale and I took these pictures today in the same area that we took the pictures from a few days ago. We managed to sneak them in right before the rain snow mix started coming down.

This dress from forever 21 is one of my new favourites but it is so short! I could not possibly wear it sans leggings without another and longer dress under it, or a skirt. In any case, I still love it - quite often I will belt it at the waist but today I wanted to show it on its own.

The Ethics of Blogging

Hello friends. This is my first real post here under the roof of Rhitbee! There is a particular topic that I wanted to broach within the confines of this first post. That topic is...ethics! Yay! How totally exicting. HEY YOU! Don't run away, I want to talk about blogging ethics and specifically fashion blogging ethics. Is that better? Kay cool.

Lets talk about my outfit first though! I love this skirt so much, I scored it last summer whilst thrifting but it is becoming much too big and soon will have to be made into a top I think. The coat has a story all its own that I will tell another day! The rest of the outfit consists in old staples. Black cardigan, gold top, purple scarf. You might see these things popping up quite a bit on this here blog. Dale and I took these pictures in "tig forest" behind his house. I've always thought it would be a great place to take outfit shots and I think they actually turned out pretty swimmingly. This was our first try though - no doubt the photos shall improve! Anyway onto the topic of the day!

Recently I have been reading a lot about how the blogosphere is lacking a real set of "ethics" or proper "codes of conduct". With it being a discussed recently on a panel at the IFB Conference last week, it seems to be a hot topic. I was not at the IFB Conference and so I cannot speak to what was dicussed there save for the brief tid-bits I have heard, however, I have my own offerings on the topic of Blogger Ethics. This probably comes as no surprise to those who know me, as I fell in love with philosophy before fashion.

There is no doubt that the topic of ethics in the blogosphere is one well worth discussing, however, I propose that coming up with codes and rules and, really, boundaries - will do nothing but harm this awesome place we call the interwebs. That is, ideally, there should be only one rule and its golden in name but I prefer the way Kant put it with his concept of the Categorical Imperative. To state all of this simply, as bloggers we should never post anything that we would not want posted about ourselves, and only post things that we would enjoy reading on another blog. We should only post things and post about things that we see the value in for itself rather than being a tool for some other end. An example of this might be endorsing a product that you do not like but still want the money coming from the endorsement. We should blog because we love it and because we love the things we blog about!

I know that most of my favourite fashion bloggers already follow these rules and I think if we all keep them in mind (when reading and commenting on blogs too) the blogosphere will continue to be an awesome place!
